The End of the Post-1989 Order: Entering a Harder, More Transactional World

A preview of the 2026 Global Outlook Live Review on March 21, 2026.

So here’s my simple thesis. The post-1989 order is not just under pressure—it’s ending in practice. What comes next isn’t one clean replacement, but a harder world made up of segmented systems, contested power, and more transactional relationships. The next slides explain how that emerging world order actually works.

This section focuses on what replaces the old order—the post-Pax Americana, post-Soviet world order. Not just what’s happening, but what’s breaking within it. At the world point, the cosmic trigger shows Neptune dissolving boundaries and soft assumptions on one side, while Saturn restores structure, consequence, and hard form on the other. The central axis at zero degrees Aries acts as the amplification point, making these shifts visible and global.

The key message is that the old narrative order dissolves, and a more explicit, structured, and sophisticated order begins to take shape in its place.

Cycles of Reset: A Historical Pattern

If we go back and look at Saturn-Neptune conjunction cycles, we can see the pattern. In 1846, the rise of communism. In 1935, the New Deal. In 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the rise of globalization, along with China’s integration onto the world stage. And now, in 2026, we’re looking at a hard reboot.

The Five Structural Shifts Replacing Globalization

So what replaces the post-1989 order? We see five major shifts:

  1. Globalization becomes system zoning.
  2. Ideological alliances shift into transactional alliances.
  3. The monetary order becomes more regionalized and technologically segmented.
  4. Gross intelligence capacity starts to matter more than GDP alone.
  5. And governance becomes more explicit and enforcement-oriented.

This isn’t random collapse. It’s a migration into a harder, more sophisticated, more technological operating system. The key message is that the old global order is being replaced by something more segmented, more transactional, and more driven by technology and capacity.

The Global Outlook is an annual strategic intelligence briefing designed for investors, founders, and forward-thinking decision-makers navigating an increasingly complex world. Each edition delivers a high-level, probability-driven framework for understanding major geopolitical shifts, macroeconomic trends, and technological transformations before they reach mainstream awareness.

More than commentary or consensus analysis, the Global Outlook provides a structural roadmap—integrating long-range cycle analysis, macro insights, and advanced forecasting models to identify where risk is building, where power is shifting, and where opportunity is emerging.

In times of accelerating change and uncertainty, the Global Outlook equips you with the clarity, timing, and perspective needed to think independently, act decisively, and stay ahead of the curve.

From Narrative to Reality Enforcement

This is where reality enforcement replaces narrative. Before 2026, we had illusion. After 2026, we move into reality.

On the left side, the old operating system: ambiguity in politics (which we clearly saw from 2020 to 2024), ambiguity in geopolitics, trust-based systems in shadow finance, AI hype in technology, and rhetorical legitimacy in governance.

On the right side, the post-Saturn-Neptune reality replaces all of that with hard borders, audited ledgers, physical constraints, and performance-based legitimacy.

We can already see this shift happening in technology. Back in 2022, AI was driven by hype—promises of productivity gains and theoretical ethics. Now, moving into the 2026 reality, we’re seeing collapsing costs, legal accountability, and physical grid constraints. Legitimacy is no longer granted by ideology—it’s based strictly on performance.

The Rise of a Distributed Multipolar System

The multipolar order is not chaotic U.S. dominance. The future isn’t about chaos—it’s about a system where the U.S. remains central but rescales into a more transactional role. At the same time, middle powers gain leverage, and disruptive states take advantage of disorder.

The key point for 2026 is that multipolarity doesn’t end power politics. It redistributes strategic leverage across more actors. The emerging order isn’t less competitive—it’s more distributed and more transactional.

New Roles in the Global Power Structure

You can see this in the actor typologies of the multipolar system. There are four main types. The U.S. acts as the rescaling hegemon. China is the constrained peer, or subdominant hegemon. Then you have connector powers like India, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. And finally, spoiler states like Russia and Iran.

This framework is useful because it shows that not every major player is operating the same way. Some stabilize, some broker, and some disrupt. The new world order is organized as much by role as by rank, and every major actor has both leverage and vulnerabilities.
