Now, looking at this chart, I’m going to tell you right now, knowing that Iran’s military and a majority of its infrastructure has been pulverized and incapacitated, along with other factors—the fact that their currency is experiencing 86% inflation, to the point where their economy is on the precipice of collapse—would tell me that the government as we know it is not likely to continue.
The government in place now is likely to fall. Now, how that’s going to happen is anybody’s guess. But there’s no way you’re going to have all these configurations and nothing happens—Iran turns out the winner, everything is fine, they get back control of the Strait of Hormuz, they go back to building nuclear weapons, they go back to rebuilding their military. All of that seems off the table.
It looks like Iran—if I looked at this chart and just said this nation-state, this company, or this person is in survival mode—they’re in crisis. They’re going through an existential crisis.
Iran’s Government in Survival Mode
So, I think the press is making the case that Iran is strong and ready to fight. It’s got plenty of missiles, and the American military campaign had no effect on them. I think that’s completely false. What I’m seeing now is a government that is in damage-control mode and is on life support.
Now, while that’s happening, at the same time, the Joint Chiefs chair is pushing for an Iran war off-ramp. They’re warning that escalation will backfire. So General Dan Caine has been coordinating assessments with Vance, Rubio, and Ratcliffe before meeting with Trump. Caine publicly told Congress on July 21st that air power has its limits.
Trump confirmed that Gulf leaders influenced his decision to suspend an enormous strike plan for August 2nd. And we do know that the ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) and PrSM (Precision Strike Missile) long-range surface-to-surface weapon depletion in the U.S. military is real enough that the Pentagon is pressuring manufacturers to accelerate production.
The White House Faces a Strategic Turning Point
So, what we’re seeing here is a classic pressure-zone progression: threatened culmination, intervention by allies, exposure of material limits, and internal command realignment.
The conversation in the White House has shifted from, “What additional targets can we destroy that still remain?” to, “Can further destruction accomplish the political objective in Iran?”
So, there are two possible manifestations here when we look at it.
Scenario One: The Off-Ramp
First, we see the off-ramp manifestation, where Vance, Rubio, Ratcliffe, along with General Caine, reach a consensus and persuade Trump that restraint can be presented as victory.
Negotiations intensify, strike plans remain available but unused, and attention turns toward opening the Strait of Hormuz and replenishing oil inventories worldwide.
Scenario Two: Escalation and a Push to Finish the Job
The other option, and this is still out there, is the escalation manifestation, where Trump interprets military caution as obstruction or humiliation, especially leading up to the midterms.
General Caine is bypassed. He is replaced by a new general who is very hawkish, so he’ll be permanently removed or temporarily replaced.
Now, Israel and CENTCOM are pressuring Trump to finish the job, and they believe they should stop negotiations with Iran. Iran has no plans to follow through on anything they agree on. The threatened strike then becomes a prestige operation rather than a clearly achieved military strategy.
So, the second possibility is that the story remains dangerous. The revelation of limits can produce prudence, but it could also provoke a leader to demonstrate that no one is limiting him.
So that’s the issue. Israel is basically pressing for an all-out destructive strike. Does Trump follow through? Or do we pull back?
The Core Contradiction: Decisive Victory vs. Military Limits
The August eclipse is really exposing a contradiction between executive demands for decisive victory and a military system warning that further escalation may consume strategic military reserves without producing the political capitulation that was intended at the outset of the initial military operation back in February, early March.
And the pivotal event may ultimately be the off-ramp or the retaliation against those attempting to construct one.
So, very difficult to call this one. I think it’s very difficult.
Now, I think we would agree it would be better for Trump to off-ramp this, claim it as a win, and move on. However, there are downsides to that. There could be blowback. And this is something I’m going to discuss.
Why De-Escalation Could Create a Bigger Problem Later
Should Trump decide, “All right, we’re not going to follow through on CENTCOM and Israel’s military recommendation to finish the job here,” this has a potential downside if they off-ramp a large-scale military strike on Iran’s cities and infrastructure to completely decimate the country and put it back into the 11th century.
So that has a downside.
Everyone thinks, “Well, great. We move on. Oil prices go down. Everything is good. We don’t have to think about it again, and I can watch Netflix without any worry.”
But I can tell you, based on what I’m going to show you in a bit, the fact that they off-ramp this might present a bigger problem later on.
