I’m not arguing that artificial intelligence is a fraud, a passing fad, or an overhyped technology with no practical value. These are arguments that are being made, particularly outside the U.S. and China, right? I believe the opposite. AI will likely become the most consequential technology in all of human history, equivalent to or even greater than the atomic bomb.
If you were trying to determine the technological prowess of a civilization—if you were an extraterrestrial observing a Type Zero civilization and looking at where they were in their development—the first thing you would probably look at is whether they had nuclear capability, right? Were they able to split the atom? The next thing you would probably look at is whether they had been able to create artificial intelligence.
The 84-Year Technology Cycle
What’s interesting is that we’re almost at that 84-year mark, right? We recently had the atomic bomb anniversary, and now we’re approaching 84 years, which is a Uranus cycle.
If we look at the Uranus cycle from the standpoint of technology, and we assume the atomic bomb was detonated in 1945, then we can do the math. We could assume that the Uranus return of the atomic bomb would mark a great transition in civilization, when artificial intelligence becomes sentient, right? And the transition to superintelligence happens imminently after that point.
Transformative Technology Is Not the Same as a Profitable Trade
So we’re looking at a transformative technology and a potentially profitable investment. But the thing is, transformative technology and a profitable investment—or a profitable investment cycle, if you will—are not the same thing.
The technology can keep improving while the stocks financing it, and the expansion of the stocks financing that technology, become vulnerable. Adoption can accelerate while margins compress. The economy can be transformed while investors discover that they paid too much, too early, for too many future earnings.
The Saturn-Neptune Reality Check
They were paying too early and too much for those future earnings, and that is exactly what the Saturn-Neptune reality check represents, right? Neptune expands the vision: limitless capability with AI, unlimited demand, a new industrial revolution, etc. Saturn audits the economics. How much capital is required? What is the return? When does the cash flow from all of this AI technology deployment, research, and innovation actually arrive?
So the question is no longer whether AI is real. The question is whether the earnings can justify what the market has already priced in.
The Central Tension: The Technology Can Succeed While the Trade Breaks
Let me begin with the central tension, because it’s possible for two apparently contradictory things to be true at the same time, especially when you have Saturn-Neptune as the dominant archetypal factor in play.
The central tension is that the technology can succeed and the trade can still break. That is the central tension, and that distinction is essential. Too much AI commentary collapses two separate questions into one.

The Technological Question
The first question is technological: Will the models—will the AI models—continue to improve? Will adoption expand? Will machine intelligence raise productivity? My answer is yes, probably dramatically.
The Financial Question
The second question is financial: Will the companies funding this build-out earn enough, soon enough, to justify the capital being deployed and the valuations being assigned to it today? That answer is much less certain.
A company can participate in a historic transformation and still be a poor investment at the wrong price. A technology can create enormous social value while economic value migrates away from the first builders and toward later applications, data owners, and low-cost competitors.
Technological Inevitability Does Not Mean Investment Inevitability
So this is not an anti-AI argument. It’s an argument against confusing technological inevitability with investment inevitability. Neptune expands the vision. Saturn orders the economics. We need both lenses if we’re going to understand what comes next.
