New Black Supermoon in Leo – July 31, 2019

According to traditional sources, the New Moon represents the end of one cycle and the beginning of another new 28-day cycle.

It is often viewed as a symbol of endings and new beginnings. The nighttime darkness of the New Moon symbolizes the mysterious watery depth of the unconscious – the transpersonal realm where personal identity and individual boundaries dissolve and the sense of direction and ego are lost for the purpose of cleansing away the past in order to prepare the way for the future.

Archetypally, the New Moon symbolically represents:

  • the fetus in the womb (Moon) waiting to be born into a new life (Sun),
  • the Gnostic Marriage of Sol (the Sun) and Lunar (the Moon) – the alchemical marriage of male and female,
  • the Greek goddess Hestia (Vesta) – the crackling blaze of the home hearth,
  • the interplay of instinct (Moon) and ego (Sun), of soul (Moon) and spirit, yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) principles, Mother (Moon) and Father (Sun) or Man (Sun) and Woman (Moon), and existence (Moon) and meaning (Sun).

This month, we’ll be having a 2nd New Moon—which doesn’t happen often—called a Black Moon, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. The term Black Moon has also been used where no New Moon occurs in a month, which only happens every 5 to 10 years in the month of February.

This particular Black Moon is also a Supermoon because it will be near its closest point to Earth on July 31, 2019 at exactly 11:25 PM EDT in Washington, D.C., meaning the Moon will appear bigger than usual because it’s closer to the Earth. However, this Black Supermoon will not be visible because when the New Moon occurs, it disappears from view in the sky on Earth.

The term Supermoon was coined by the astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. According to Nolle’s research observations, Supermoons have coincided with severe weather, seismic events, hurricanes and other natural disasters. At a personal level, Supermoons reflect an intensification of the lunar energy. The Black Supermoon augurs a period of confusion, vacillation, and uncertainty where one may feel within the grip of the unconscious processes (repressed feelings, hidden memories, habits, thoughts, desires, and reactions) that influence our behavior and experiences, even though we may be unaware of these underlying influences.

This phase of the New Moon occurs at 8 degrees and 37 minutes is square to Uranus, auguring sudden changes and unexpected developments in the offing that require to make some proactive changes in areas that one may be ignoring. This is aspect also augurs a breaking down of existing forms that requires the necessity of choice of some kind, before one feels prepared. This period implies the need of looking carefully at the implications of one’s choices in one’s personal and emotional life, rather than being driven blindly out of urgency.
